There’s something pretty amazing about viewing a world wonder. Machu Picchu is even more spectacular because you don’t see it coming.
Literally, Machu Picchu smacks you in your senses and is almost overwhelming at first glance. If you’ve visited a world wonder, say the Pyramids of Giza or Petra in Jordan, you get your first glimpse of the site as you walk towards it. If you’re visiting Egypt, there are hotels you can stay in that provide a view of the pyramids you can enjoy from your balcony.
Machu Picchu is a little more hidden. There are two ways to get there – either a 4 day trek called the Inca Trail, or a bus and the scenic railway from Cusco to the mountaintop town of Aguas Calientes, and from there either take a bus or walk up the hill to the entrance gate. There are still no views of Machu Picchu at this point – but then you walk along a path for a few minutes, up a small hill and turn a corner, and there it is.
